Argentum was pleased to join last week’s #ElderCareChat, with COO Maribeth Bersani serving as an expert panelist. Bersani engaged participants in an enlightening Twitter conversation about the importance of using your senses to select the right senior living community for you or for a loved one.
The hour-long #ElderCareChat, which was inspired by a recent post featuring insight from Bersani, underscored Argentum’s mission to promote choice, dignity, independence, and quality of life for seniors.
The Twitter session, which generated more than 2.6 million impressions, highlighted the priceless value of a tour in a family’s senior living decision: “The community tour is critical because it allows you to use all your senses to determine if the community feels like home,” Bersani tweeted.
On the community tour, families can look for signs of interaction and engagement, and listen for sounds of people enjoying life. Smells should be warm and inviting, and the food should be pleasing to the individual palate. As for touch, everything—from the furniture to the fabrics to the flooring—should feel like home.
Of course, families must consider facts and figures about the community in addition to their own sensory experience. Prospective residents must fully understand the types of care and services provided, as well as all associated costs. Bersani also advised families to inquire about the community’s safety features, such as sprinklers, smoke detectors, and emergency evacuation and preparedness plans.
In the end, though, the senses provide an invaluable tool for making an informed senior living decision.
As one participant tweeted, “I would trust my gut. I know my mother so facts would count, but my decision would be based on what my senses learned.”
