Senior living was on a roll in 2013 and ALFA’s Senior Living Executive magazine once again offers its annual look at the largest senior living providers.
While mega deals were largely absent in 2013, 2014 is proving to be an entirely different story. In the first quarter of this year, Brookdale and Emeritus announced plans to merge in a $2.8 billion deal creating a 1,100-community company.
“The story for 2013 was there’s a lot of debt and equity coming into and wanting to be in the senior living market,” says Jeffrey Davis, CEO of Chicago-based Cambridge Realty Capital Companies.
In 2013, greater availability of capital fueled many transactions and much shuffling of Senior Living Executive’s 2014 list of the largest for-profit, public and private senior living operators. Two-thirds of operators on the 2014 largest providers list grew their capacities in 2013.
