New Bill Takes Aim at LTC Worker Shortage

U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer has introduced the Caring for an Aging
America Act, legislation that would expand career advancement
opportunities for nurses and front-line caregivers by offering
specialty training in long-term care.

The Caring for an Aging America Act would provide $130 million in
federal funding over five years for training. Participants who complete
specialty training in geriatrics or gerentology also receive
educational loan forgiveness when they agree to provide full-time
clinical practice and service to seniors for two years.

Web site for Sen. Boxer notes that “proper geriatric care could reduce
hospital, nursing home, and home care costs by at least 10 percent a
year, saving $267 billion in 2020.”
