ALFA’s Strategies to Preserve Your Employees’ Choice

Dear ALFA Member:

The effort by organized labor to bring unions to senior living communities is in full action mode.

Last
month, SEIU launched a cynical “Campaign to Improve Assisted Living”
Web site clearly designed to bait disgruntled employees, families, and
residents to “tell their stories,” to promote every critical newspaper
report, to distort the true picture of assisted living, and to spout
the virtues of organized labor as the solution.
Last week, SEIU
announced the creation of “SEIU Healthcare,” a “new national healthcare
union with more than one million members.” The union” will focus on
uniting more of the 9 million healthcare workers who don’t have a voice
for quality care through a union.” Senior living companies and
communities are a major target.
This week, the U.S. Senate votes on
the so-called “Employee Free Choice Act” sponsored by organized
labor—intended to take away your employees’ right to a secret ballot
(to decide whether a union is best for them or not).
But MOST
IMPORTANT for you to know NOW, however, is the SEIU’s current
grassroots campaign at YOUR doorstep—the lead story in this week’s ALFA
Employer of Choice Newsletter. Using extraordinary means of deception,
SEIU organizers are showing up at communities all over the country.
Some communities are being “salted” surrepticiously with union
organizers; others showing up at company picnics; others pretending to
be repairmen and distributing “Campaign to Improve Assisted Living”
inside communities. Still others are directly approaching residents and
their families (as they did last month when they distributed flowers
and literature in one company’s communities on Mother’s Day).

If
you are not a target today, you will be a target tomorrow. I urge you
to innoculate yourself against the possibilities of union success in
your company and your community or communities. Review the ALFA
Employer of Choice newsletter, especially “10 Steps to Take Now.”
