ALEXANDRIA, Va. – January 16, 2012
— ALFA, the largest national association serving the collective
interests of professionally-managed senior living communities, today
announced a partnership with the first-ever senior living association in
India. The American association will assist the new Indian group with
developing a program to advance excellence in senior living in India and
champion quality of life for the millions of Indian seniors who will
benefit from professionally-managed senior living communities.
In December, a history-making outcome of Retirement Living World India,
an influential, first-time gathering of senior living companies in
India, was the formation of the first national senior living association
in India. Like the founding of most professional trade associations, Association Senior Living India started
with a gathering of companies that discovered they are all in the same
business, have many of the same challenges and, know that if they work
together in association, they can create even greater success for their
respective companies and their business in general. ALFA was
represented at the conference by ALFA Director Steven Vick, Co-Founder
and CEO of Signature Senior Living and a long-time entrepreneur of
senior living in the United States.
The three day conference, held in New Delhi,
brought together industry decision makers from India and around the
world to discuss how these businesses could meet the growing demand for
seniors housing in India. Participants discussed business strategies,
market trends, partnership models, as well as investments and financing
opportunities available in the Indian senior living market.
During this meeting and under the leadership of
Vick and Mansoor Dalal, chairman of Oasis Senior Commune-India,
announced the formation of Association Senior Living India (ASLI)
as a national professional trade association intended to represent
senior living providers in India. The acronym ASLI means REAL in the
Hindi language, echoing the need for real and committed players in this
nascent industry. Mansoor has been designated founder chairman, and
Abdulla Kagalwalla of Signature India and Vick will serve on the ASLI
board. ALFA will assist with the development of the new association.
“The Indian senior living sector is still in its
infancy and is expected to grow at a rapid pace in the coming years,”
said Vick. “Senior living providers in India can learn a tremendous
amount from the fits-and starts we had when senior living was in its
infancy in the U.S. ALFA, working closely with ASLI, can contribute to
their success by sharing with our partners in India what we’ve learned
over the past 20 years.”
ALFA was originally formed to represent American
assisted living companies providing a resident-centered,
non-institutional alternative to nursing homes. ALFA has evolved as the
needs and demands of consumers have changed while, concurrently,
holding fast to its resident-centered philosophy of choice,
independence, dignity and quality of life.
“ALFA is committed to ensuring seniors have an
optimal quality of life in a place they call home,” said Richard P.
Grimes, president and CEO of ALFA. “Working with others who share our
commitment to serving seniors, wherever they may be in the world, is
consistent with ALFA’s mission.”
During the conference, Vick spoke about building
a business in senior living and the value and opportunities offered to
entrepreneurs and investors. A long-time champion of the
resident-centered philosophy, Vick serves on the ALFA Board of Directors
and is a leading voice in the senior living business.
