Amendment Would Expand Work Tax Credit for Veterans

[current_event_date]

Representative Susie Lee (D-NV) filed an amendment to the FY27 National Defense Authorization Act on June 15 that would expand the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) by creating a new “qualified veteran” category covering veterans enrolled in an educational institution and using VA or Department of Defense education benefits, including GI Bill programs. The amendment also carves out an exception from the standard minimum employment period rules for this group, easing the path for employers to claim the credit when hiring student veterans. As a member of the Critical Labor Coalition, Argentum has been a longstanding advocate for WOTC — including as a top ask during this year’s Public Policy Fly-In — and continues to press for the credit’s retroactive extension and permanent reauthorization following its December 31, 2025 expiration.
