Argentum and ASHA Press Trump Administration on Immigration Program

[current_event_date]

Argentum continues to advocate on senior living workforce immigration concerns. Last Tuesday, Argentum and ASHA sent a joint letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem regarding the administration’s decision to terminate the Cuba Haiti Nicaragua Venezuela (CHNV) parole program. We specifically requested the administration delay action on terminating immigration status for one year, for those who are employed in senior living communities.

Argentum has heard from several senior living operators that employees who were part of the CHNV parole program have received notices from DHS regarding the immediate termination of the program and that the recipient’s permission to remain in the U.S. has been immediately rescinded along with associated work authorizations. The CHNV initiative allowed more than 500,000 individuals to enter the U.S. subject to administrative processing.

Argentum and ASHA’s letter call attention to the critical role of these workers in senior living communities in caring for residents, and the impact of terminating their employment amid broader workforce shortages in the industry. We also underscored that there is currently no worker visa program suitable to the needs of the long-term care workforce, compared to programs available to other industries, such as agriculture, hospitality, highly skilled workers and others.

In addition to our letter, Argentum has been working with policymakers in the Trump administration and lawmakers on Capitol Hill to raise awareness on the disruption that these termination are having on the senior living workforce.

Resources are available in Argentum’s Foreign-Born Workers Resource Guide (FBRG) for each state on immigration data, employment, education, healthcare, family services, housing, and legal. Each of the seven sections includes a list of organizations, contact information, and links to relevant websites.

Additionally, Argentum has provided member-exclusive resources related to the recent immigration developments that are available upon request, and members with questions or concerns may reach out to Paul Williams at [email protected].
