Argentum Meets with VA Leadership as Veterans Pilot Program Advances

[current_event_date]

Argentum met with senior Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) officials last week as part of its ongoing effort to advance implementation of the VA’s assisted living demonstration project, a policy Argentum has championed from its earliest stages and has called for expanded eligibility for all veterans. We are encouraged by the progress made to date and believe the VA’s recent streamlining of its Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) structure creates an opportunity to expand access to more veterans across the country.

Since the program was enacted in January 2025 through the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act, Argentum has worked closely with VA leadership, administration officials, and congressional champions to ensure the initiative moves forward. The demonstration project originated from the bipartisan Expanding Veterans’ Options for Long-Term Care Act, legislation Argentum helped advance alongside veterans and long-term care advocates. The pilot will allow eligible veterans to access assisted living through the VA, creating a new option for individuals who may not require higher-acuity institutional care but still need long-term services and supports.

Argentum has maintained consistent engagement with the VA throughout the implementation process. Argentum staff met with senior VA and White House officials earlier this year to press for progress and advocate for eventual expansion of the program beyond the initial pilot. We believe the demonstration project represents a significant opportunity for both veterans and taxpayers. By offering veterans greater choice in where they receive long-term services and supports, the program can expand access to a residential, community-based care setting while providing the VA with a more cost-effective alternative to higher-acuity institutional care. Previous VA analyses and Congressional testimony have projected substantial savings when eligible veterans choose assisted living rather than nursing home placement.

Argentum has served as one of the leading advocates for expanding veterans’ access to assisted living. Looking ahead, Argentum will continue working with VA leadership, Congress, and industry stakeholders to advance the demonstration project and build the case for nationwide expansion. Our goal remains ensuring that every veteran can choose assisted living when it is the setting best aligned with their needs, preferences, and quality-of-life goals.
