Assisted Living Executive Magazine Releases 2009 Largest Providers List

[current_event_date]

Assisted Living Executive, the award-winning magazine of the Assisted Living Federation of America, has released its much-anticipated annual list of the Largest Providers in the assisted living business. The list features the industry’s Top 70 Largest Providers – giving readers and industry watchers a broad view of the competitive assisted living landscape. The list and accompanying story appear in the March/April issue of the magazine. This year’s Top 10 Largest Providers, as of January 1, 2009, ranked by total assisted living resident capacity, are:

1. Sunrise Senior Living, McLean, VA
2. Emeritus Senior Living, Seattle, WA
3. Brookdale Senior Living, Brentwood, TN
4. Sunwest Management Inc., Salem, OR
5. Atria Senior Living Group, Louisville, KY
6. Five Star Senior Living, Newton, MA
7. Assisted Living Concepts, Inc., Menomonee Falls, WI
8. Merrill Gardens, Seattle, WA
9. One-Eighty/Leisure Care, Seattle, WA
10. HCR Manor Care, Toledo, OH

While many business sectors continue to feel the stress of the economic downturn, this year’s Largest Providers list suggests that assisted living providers so far have not taken as heavy a hit. While growth has slowed from the past few years, more than half of providers surveyed by Assisted Living Executive still report increases in licensed assisted living resident capacity, as of January 1, even if it’s due to adding only one to three new buildings to their portfolios.

Only six providers reported capacity losses, but actual numbers were low, indicating the sale of only one or two communities. The largest such decrease was 259 residents by Kisco Senior Living, reducing its rank by 13 spots from No. 41 in 2008 to No. 54 in 2009. However, because Kisco has new projects under development, the company is likely to charge back up the list in 2010.

Assisted Living Executive also reports that affordable assisted living is a sector to watch for new building. This sector has access to financing resources not available to traditional providers such as tax credits, nontaxable bond issues, and HUD financing.
