The Biden administration announced that it would extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela, permitting roughly 242,700 people to retain their work authorizations and deportation protections while allowing as many as 472,000 more Venezuelans to potentially apply. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) similarly announced a similar plan for Afghanistan to allow 3,100 Afghans to keep their temporary protections, while opening up eligibility to around 14,600 Afghans. TPS provides relief to people who have already been displaced in the U.S. so they can live and work legally. The Biden Administration is also considering a potential increase in the cap for refugees to be admitted into the U.S. next year. The administration currently has a goal of admitting 125,000 refugees per year, of which 51,231 have been admitted so far as of August 31. The administration had already lifted the cap early in President Biden’s term to 62,500 refugees, a significant increase from the Trump Administration’s cap of 15,000 refugees per year.
