The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted unanimously last week to reduce recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines, moving away from blanket policies and toward a “shared clinical decision-making” between individuals and their doctors. The new recommendations, which will be reviewed this week by the CDC include:
- Adults 65+: The prior blanket recommendation for vaccination was removed. Vaccination is now suggested only after consulting a health provider.
- Ages 6 months to 64: Also fall under the new shared decision model, though the panel noted benefits are greater for those at higher risk of severe illness.
- No Prescription Required: The panel rejected a recommendation to require prescriptions for Covid-19 vaccines. The vote was initially tied (6–6), but was broken by Chair Dr. Martin Kulldorff. The panel had been fully replaced this Summer by HHS Secretary Kennedy, including five members who were appointment this month.
