Major manufacturers in the
technology industry, such as Philips and Samsung, are changing their business
strategies to meet the needs and preferences of older consumers …
According to a New York Times report: “The very young
and the elderly have never been target markets for high-tech companies, which
focus instead on the global mainstream. But with the economic downturn reducing
growth, companies are applying cutting-edge technology to the often-neglected
extremes of the consumer spectrum.”
Senior living providers,
indirectly, could be fueling this increased attention on the senior market.
Technology industry experts argue that – because seniors today are leading
better quality, activity-rich lives – they have become a more attractive
consumer group.
“We have many more older
people now. They have a better quality of life, and there is a big industry
there,” Ingema’s Iker Laskibar told the Times.
Ingema is an institute in San Sebastian, Spain, that develops technology for
seniors and the disabled.
The Times also reports on the increasing popularity of the Nintendo Wii
at senior living communities. Assisted
Living Executive reports on this in its latest cover story, “Tools of
Engagement.”
