The Texas Assisted Living Association (TALA) is closely monitoring the worsening water shortage in the Corpus Christi region and the potential implications for assisted living communities that serve some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.
Corpus Christi is facing an unprecedented water crisis driven by a prolonged, multi‑year drought and critically low reservoir levels. As of mid‑April, the combined storage of the city’s primary reservoirs—Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon Reservoir—has fallen below 8 percent capacity, prompting the City of Corpus Christi to implement Stage 3 water restrictions and prepare for the possibility of a declared water emergency in the months ahead.
TALA is engaging with policymakers and relevant authorities to ensure they recognize that senior care settings are not typical commercial water users and that assisted living and similar communities operate 24 hours a day and must maintain safe, sanitary environments at all times. Any future drought response planning should prioritize the continuity of care for older Texans. Argentum will also be supporting TALA’s efforts through joint federal outreach to the Texas congressional delegation.
