The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center opens Discovery Center with unveiling of art exhibit promoting local artists

GAITHERSBURG, Md. – The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center announced the official opening of its Discovery Center today in Downtown Crown, commemorating the milestone with an initiative to curate and display local art in the facility. A grand opening celebration of the Discovery Center is planned for August. The Discovery Center will be home to the initial team members for The Carnegie, a Kisco Senior Living community, before its opening in 2024.

The Carnegie’s ongoing “Call for Art” program is Kisco’s initial collaboration since recently becoming the first business member of the Arts & Culture Alliance of the Gaithersburg Parks, Arts and Recreation Corporation, or G-PARC. The nonprofit engages public and private partnerships, promotes awareness and raises resources to support new and matured parks, arts and recreation initiatives. The collaboration aligns perfectly with Kisco’s mission to highlight art, music, literature, and culture for senior citizens and encourage individual passions.

“The arts represent a key ingredient in Kisco’s overall approach to helping our residents live their best lives, by empowering them to pursue their passions and find their sense of purpose,” said Andy Kohlberg, president and CEO of Kisco Senior Living. “We are honored to support these local artists by offering them a venue to display and share their work with the community at large, and we encourage the public to come and see the creative and inspiring pieces on display.”

The current artwork will be displayed through September at the Discovery Center, located at 129 Ellington Boulevard in Gaithersburg. The initial exhibit of 28 pieces was narrowed down from more than 60 submissions from members of the Gaithersburg Artist Collective, a program of the Kentlands Community Foundation and a member of the G-PARC alliance. The artwork, which was selected by a jury comprised of representatives from the alliance and Kisco, includes acrylic and watercolor paintings, photography, mixed media, wood carving and jewelry.

“We are so excited to be a part of this project and have the ability to showcase our talented artists through another unique venue in our community,” said Jaree Donnelly, artist and chair of the Kentlands Community Foundation. “We’re proud to partner with organizations like Kisco that support and believe in the importance of the arts.”

As part of its G-PARC Arts & Culture Alliance membership, Kisco intends to continue displaying original, local artwork on a quarterly basis at the Discovery Center. Upon the opening of The Carnegie at Washingtonian Center in 2024, Kisco plans to display these juried exhibitions in the community’s art gallery.

Kisco Senior Living broke ground on The Carnegie in October 2021. The Carnegie will be one of Kisco’s Signature Communities, which represent an expansion of distinct upscale lifestyle offerings with elevated standards of hospitality. The Carnegie will offer spacious one- and two-bedroom floorplans for independent living, assisted living and memory care residences.
