The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA) is now law, and with it, lawmakers are turning their attention to other major legislative packages to advance their policy agenda. This includes the annual appropriations process, with current funding due to expire in September, as well as using the budget reconciliation process again to advance major Trump administration priorities.
The OBBBA used the fiscal year 2025 budget reconciliation vehicle to enact key elements of the Trump agenda. This process can be used once per fiscal year and only requires simple majorities in both the House and Senate to pass; as such, Congressional Republicans have suggested that while they still maintain a governing trifecta with the White House, House, and Senate, they may use the FY 2026 budget (which becomes available in October) and the FY 2027 budget (starting in October 2026) to enact policy priorities.
Argentum will be working closely with policymakers to advance our priorities that were not included in the OBBBA. This includes the Older Americans Act reauthorization, which already includes Argentum priorities from the Care Across Generations Act and the SENIOR Act. We will also continue to work with lawmakers to promote the Credit for Caring Act to serve as a dedicated tax credit to offset the cost of long-term care, as well as the Caring for Seniors Act, and workforce development priorities.
The Senate officially began the process last week with markup hearings of the Commerce, Justice, Science, Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA, and the Legislative Branch. The House has already advanced through Committee the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs bill, and Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA, Defense, Homeland Security, and Legislative Branch funding bills.
