Social Security Administration officials say they expect disability claims to continue on a sharp upward trajectory as baby boomers begin “reaching their most injury-prone years,” reports USA Today. Older boomers have begun moving into senior living communities, but those who are still working may be doing so for recessionary reasons, experts say. However, their workplace injuries are contributing to a 30 percent jump in disability claims, and may affect their future care needs.
According to USA TODAY, SSA officials estimate they’ll receive 3.3 million new disability claims over the next year, up from their previous estimates of 3 million projected several months ago. Also fueling a backlog of claims: At least 10 states have furloughed hundreds of employees that process initial benefit claims.
