ALFA is leading advocacy efforts to oppose the so-called Employee Free Choice Act, which is expected to be filed soon in the House and Senate. The legislation would deny employees a secret ballot election to decide whether a union will represent them.
Under the Employee Free Choice Act, employers would be required to recognize a union if the union presents the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) with signed authorization cards from a majority of employees. This method of determination, commonly referred to as “card checks,” creates a coercive and intimidating environment as the authorization cards are often signed in the presence of union workers and organizers.
ALFA alternatively supports the Secret Ballot Protection Act which allows employees to determine union representation by casting secret ballots in elections conducted by the NLRB. ALFA has created the United for Choice in Senior Living Coalition and is participating with a coalition of trade associations and business organizations through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Coalition for a Democratic Workplace to fight the Employee Free Choice legislation.
