Many gay seniors fear anti-gay bias at senior centers, in nursing
homes, and from health-care providers, according to advocacy groups
AARP and SAGE (Service and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). An estimated 2.5
million gay seniors in America are twice as likely to live alone, four
times less likely to have adult children to help them, and far more
fearful of discrimination from health-care providers. The April issue
of Assisted Living Executive, ALFA’s flagship magazine, addresses the needs of gay residents in senior living communities in an article entitled “All-Inclusive Care.”
AARP this month will co-sponsor a major national conference focused
on gay and lesbian aging issues. The conference is being organized by
SAGE. For details, go to www.sageusa.org.
