ALEXANDRIA, Va.  – September 21, 2010 – The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) today announced that MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski will speak on the Politics of Aging in America at the 2011 ALFA Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida on April 5-7.  Morning Joe, a popular morning news show, airs each weekday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. ET on MSNBC.

Considered among the largest, most important events in senior living, the annual ALFA conference offers educational sessions, valuable networking opportunities and collaboration aimed at advancing quality care and services for seniors and their families.  Attendees include decision makers from national, regional and local providers of assisted living and other senior living services. Registration for the 2011 ALFA Conference begins November 1.  More conference information is available at www.alfa.org/conference.

The Politics of Aging in America

By 2020, America will have 7.1 million seniors who are aged 85 or more, a 20% increase from today.  The aging baby boomer population and the increase in life expectancy are creating national questions about how to ensure these seniors have access to long term services and support that champion quality of life.  Meanwhile, public policy and the nation’s fiscal situation may or may not improve quickly enough to meet their needs.  Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinksi will address these questions head-on and how the choices America’s political leaders make today will impact the future of senior living.

“America is approaching a crossroads with its long term care policies,” said Richard Grimes, president & CEO of the Assisted Living Federation of America.  “Each weekday morning, Joe and Mika along with a roundtable of experts and commentators, explore the serious political issues shaping public policy in an interesting and unusually even-handed bipartisan way.   Policies proposed to address national issues such as health care reform, Social Security, the national debt, taxes and immigration will impact how our members serve seniors in the future.  Joe and Mika are experienced political commentators as well as the adult children of aging parents themselves. As a result, they have a keen interest in how policymakers address aging today and in the future.”

Former Congressman Joe Scarborough (R-FL) represented Florida’s first district from 1994 until 2001.  While in Congress, Scarborough was cited, among others, by the National Journal for having acquired “unusual power and influence,” given his short time in Washington.  In 1998, Scarborough drafted a bill on long term care, which President Clinton called “landmark legislation.”  After retiring from Congress to spend more time with his family, Scarborough went back to practice law and also pursue a career as an author and publisher.

Mika Brzezinski started her journalism career at a local Hartford, Connecticut news station, and quickly advanced her career with hard hitting reports.  She hosted the CBS Evening News Weekend Edition and has gone on to host a variety of NBC News programming, including MSNBC’s Morning Joe.  Mika grew up with politics around her as the daughter of foreign policy expert and former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Bzezinski.
