On February 6th, the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) welcomed over fifty senior living leaders to Washington, DC for the 2013 ALFA Public Policy Institute. Attendees at the one day event learned about key state and federal public policy issues expected to impact senior care in 2013 and discussed strategies for supporting resident-centered, consumer-driven senior living communities as a solution to the many questions around long term care policy. Attendees included members of the ALFA Government Relations Executive Roundtable and ALFA Board of Directors as well as representatives from ALFA’s state affiliates and chapters. Participants engaged in discussion on regulatory and legislative challenges faced by providers, best state regulatory practices, and other federal and state issues. |
The event also included educational presentations from Dan Purgiel, Principal, LRS Architects, about recent changes to the life safety building code; Andy Carle, Executive in Residence, George Mason University Program in Senior Housing Administration, and John Cantiello, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Health Administration and Policy about their current research on quality of life in senior living communities; as well as Ian Kremer, Executive Director, Leaders Engaged on Alzheimer’s Disease (LEAD), about ALFA’s and LEAD’s efforts to end Alzheimer’s by 2025. The public policy institute also featured updates on the actions of various federal agencies, state laws and regulations, and priorities for the 113th Congress.
“Legislators and regulators across the country and here in Washington need to hear leaders in senior living speaking with one voice to promote public policy that advances the core principles of choice, dignity, independence and quality of life for seniors,” said ALFA President & CEO, Richard P. Grimes. “The 2013 ALFA Public Policy Institute is one of the many ways we ensure alignment with these core principles and help advocate for laws and regulations championing quality of life for all seniors.”
